"A HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT"
Frequently Asked Questions

We had very little money after the cancer treatments. We couldn't just rent another place. I had a very hard time finding a place that would rent to me with 4 children I could imagine finding one for 6 children.

Where ever I went the entity followed me. When I went to work the telephone system or the computer system would go down. My car would break down. It would not let me go. One day I went to work and I had been telling my coworkers of the things that were going on in my house and many thought my son was telling the truth. One lady who had tried to help me by giving me the phone number of the Warrens told me she was telling her husband about my house. She and her husband took the dogs out while they were talking and when she turned around one of her dogs was missing. She said they called and called and couldn't find the dog. Finally one went into the house and there was the dog standing at the door. She told me she and her husband were certain they had taken the dog out with them.
It seemed that when others would try to get involved and help me things would begin to happen to them as well. This scared me almost more than anything else. To think that this could hurt those around me for trying to help.
Why didn't you believe your son that the house was haunted?
The answer to that is a several part answer.
My son was going through cancer treatment. His cancer was located in his neck and he was receiving strong medication to combat it. His head, neck, and chest were being bombarded with Cobalt Radiation. I was concerned that it could be a side effect of his treatment program.
Although I believed in the human spirit, and in angels, and devils and absolutely in God, I didn't realize they could affect our dimension in the way that they can.
I guess I needed to see if for myself.
I had an experience in 1980 it began simply enough I was doing laundry down in the basement of my rented townhouse. I just had the feeling that I was being watched. I just couldn't shake it and it spooked me into going back upstairs. My husband was on the night shift and my children were sleeping upstairs. I began to watch TV but nothing but scary movies were on. I decided to go to bed and was almost asleep when I was jolted by an eerie sensation of someone in the room with me then I felt the bed sink in as if someone had put their knee down on the mattress on the side of my bed and covered my mouth with a hand I assume. My hair was long and in a pony tail and it had been pulled straight up over my head. I searched to dark for and image of a human but there wasn't anyone there. I began to pray, "The Lords Prayer" and after a period of time I was released. I was completely awake it wasn't a dream. I rolled over immediately and called my priest who came out the very next day. He advised me that my home was clear and told me to get rid of some items in the house which I did.
When this began with my son I called that same priest and he asked me, "Carmen do you feel anything like you did in 1980 when that happened to you?" I told him I had not had that type of an experience again." I hadn't. When my son told me of ghost I tried to sense if there was something there and I felt nothing.
Why were some things embellished or exaggerated in the book or movie?
Once a film or book is finished and released, it can be difficult to verify that it will portray exactly the sequence of events accurately. For the most part, the book and the movie portrayed the actual events of the case, but there was some embellishment.
How did you not know that the house used to be a funeral home?
The house didn't look exactly as they portrayed it in the movie. The morgue was covered in building materials and work tools like saws and the such. In the movie they have modern morgue tools these were not so modern and I didn't really see the downstairs on my initial visit I just saw the living quarters upstairs.
Did you really use the refrigerator used for the bodies for your food?
No. The freezer we used for food was a regular freezer that looked just like a freezer in anyone's home. It wasn't in the morgue; it was in a coffin room. There were several tool rooms and storage rooms that were not connected with the morgue itself.
Did anyone ever figure out why the house became haunted?
Although there is no definite way to know exactly what happened in the house there was quiet a bit of evidence that necrophilia was part of the problem.
Is it true that the property value was severely impacted, and the sellers were forced to tell the story to prospective buyers?
No. the property values in that area of CT stay firm no matter what happens. The same person still owns the property today.
Does the current owner of the house have any supernatural phenomena occurring today?
The current owner has owned the property since Mr. Hallahan sold it. The owner wanted to use the property as an office building for the hospital, however, he could not get the zoning changed. He was forced to rent it as a two family house or duplex. When I went to rent from this gentleman, he was very kind and did what he could to accomodate us. He still owns the property today. Although I haven't had contact with him since I moved, I have heard there have been no further supernatural occurances.
Prior to the story breaking he did tell me of a couple of things that workers and others had told him. One story involded a worker that had taken tools and a ladder off his truck, he couldn't find something and went back to the truck upon returning to the foyer his ladder was gone along with his tools. they were back on the truck.
There were a few more stories. One worker broke his leg coming down the stairs and another had a stroke and later died. Are these things connected to the house? I cant answer that for sure, but I can add my father was murdered within months of me moving in. He was very concerned about his oldest grandson, but I lost touch with him the month I moved in. I could not reach him by phone and no one saw him. I filed a missing person report in July they found my father beaten to death in his home on December 8, 1987. My sister contracted AIDS that year and my brother was run over by a van and killed. I had a car accident and lost 4 more family members over the next years. I injured my spine in 1998 and it took 6 years for me to recover and return to work.
Why did the boys sleep in the basement?
That is the only place they could have slept. The other rooms upstairs were too small to accomodate the young teens.
